In the Spotlight: The Midlands – The Story So Far of our Birmingham & Coventry Choirs

Since forming our Birmingham choir in late 2014, we’ve enjoyed many fantastic years of exciting events and gigs, rehearsals and met lots of lovely people here in the Midlands.

From our first roof-raising, sold-out show in the main auditorium at MAC Birmingham in November 2015, we then saw a number of hugely exciting opportunities arise…

Starting with a great tour featuring Ian Waite and Natalie Lowe from BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, the group took to the stage at many stunning, historic venues in Reading, St. Albans, Swindon and Leamington Spa.

From there, the group went on to perform at a variety of weddings, public events and festivals in and around Birmingham.  Birmingham VOTT then went on to ACE the audition for the pro UK tour of the musical Godspell, joining our Newcastle group on the tour, only to sadly see the tour cancelled and cut-short.

However, it wasn’t long until our next BIG opportunity… and WHAT an opportunity!  In early 2019 we were thrilled to announce that we would be performing 7 back-to-back shows at Arena Birmingham with Take That, and featuring Lulu and Rick Astley, as part of their UK Greatest Hits tour!   An incredible experience lay ahead as we joined the guys and Lulu for the epic performance and staging of their huge hits, Relight My Fire and Never Forget.  And all to mere crowds of over 15,000 people each night!

During this time, we were thrilled to launch our second group in the Midlands when our Coventry choir was born.  The group was growing quickly and making real steps but, unfortunately, Covid hit just a few months later.

However, in the summer of 2021, after 15 months of online sessions, we returned to in-person sessions in a church car park in Birmingham.  And what an incredible feeling that was!  Weirdly wonderful, it wasn’t long until our next big opportunity came along and we were thrilled to have vocalists from both our Birmingham and Coventry choirs involved in the Opening Ceremony of the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.  Singing with the city’s own famous sons, Duran Duran on their beautiful hit ‘Ordinary World’, it was amazing to be involved in such an incredible, global event here in our very own backyard.

With the likes of private wedding events and Christmas gigs in between, it wasn’t long until our next big opportunity was around the corner when professional England & Harlequins Rugby player, Joe Marler, came calling.  With a really successful podcast already established, Joe was off on a UK tour from Glasgow to London and VOTT was right there every step of the way with him.  Featuring as the house band on all the shows, providing little musical segues between guests, jingles, singing a cappella snippets for a ‘TV Theme Tune’ Quiz as well as full numbers to feature the choir, it was a hugely fun and fantastic experience which saw vocalists from Birmingham take to stages at great venues both in the city and even in Bristol!  We love the occasional VOTT road trip…

September 2023 has now also seen the full relaunch of our Coventry choir, and allied to our long established Birmingham choir, we can’t wait for the many fun sessions and exciting gig opportunities that lie ahead in the Midland over the months and years to come.
